This winter, Arts First is excited to continue our Open Studio series for adults ages 18 and older with a focus on traditional digital animation using iPads and Procreate Dreams. This hands-on session invites participants to explore the fundamentals of frame-by-frame animation while developing their own original animated projects.
Over four classes, students will learn the core principles of traditional animation, including timing, motion, character movement, and visual storytelling. Participants will gain experience with storyboarding, rough animation, clean-up, and exporting finished work using Procreate Dreams.
This session emphasizes student-driven creation. While instructors will provide guidance, demonstrations, and technical support, most class time will be dedicated to developing personal animation projects. Students will be encouraged to experiment, collaborate, and build confidence in both their artistic and technical skills.
By the end of the four-week session, each participant will complete a short animated piece that reflects their creative vision. Whether you’re new to animation, a visual artist curious about motion, or a storyteller eager to bring your ideas to life, this winter Open Studio offers a supportive and creative space to learn and grow.

Open Studio Filmmaking Program History:

The Free Open Studio Filmmaking Class is a unique opportunity for people of all backgrounds and experience levels to explore the art of filmmaking in a supportive, inclusive, and creative environment. Designed to be accessible and community-focused, this class invites participants to learn the entire filmmaking process—from concept development and scripting, to cinematography, editing, and final production.

Offered year-round in four seasonal sessions (summer, fall, winter, and spring), each session consists of 4–5 engaging class meetings. Participants gain hands-on experience with professional filmmaking equipment and receive personalized instruction and mentorship to help bring their stories to life.

The course emphasizes high-quality education in the fine art of visual storytelling, encouraging students to view filmmaking through the lens of 2-dimensional visual composition. Through guided workshops, film analysis, and practice, students will develop the skills and confidence to express their unique voices on screen.

At its core, this class is about more than just filmmaking—it’s about building a vibrant, inclusive community of local filmmakers who support one another, share knowledge, and grow together. Whether you’re a first-time filmmaker or looking to sharpen your skills, we welcome you to join us and start creating.

Let’s build a local film scene together—one short film at a time. Grab a friend, bring your ideas, and let’s make movies.
